Media and Leadership - Learning The Persuasive Language of Media

This commercial amazes me which charts the history of English history in 2 minutes. The commercial appeals to my REPTILIAN brain (with the plane flying upon the boy’s head, football fans celebrating England’s victory and etc.), my LIMBIC brain (with the celebrations and illuminations and the ambiance close to end), and my NEOCORTEX (thinking all about those historic events including 2nd World War, The Revolutionary Action of Women for their rights, commotions in England ).

It contains some persuasive techniques mentioned below:

PLAIN FOLKS: The commercial charts the national history of England and the individuals are everyday people who lived through those events.

SLOGAN: Using the slogan: “Hovis Bakery. As good as it has always been.” They make the users to be assured of the experience of the company and the quality of their products.

FLAG WAVING: It shows the events of English National History, as 2nd World War, Revolutionary Act of Women, victory of England at Football Cup, and etc. implying they have also been through all that events and Hovis Bakery is still at your service as an English company.

WARM FUZZIES: The Company uses the boy every time as a symbol or like a face of their commercial. The common persuasive technique has been followed by most of the companies (using children’s innocence and cuteness) as more effective way to persuade the users.

TIMING: The commercial demonstrates the historical events and implying that the company is still in progress, and at the service of the community since 1866.

Our Brains On Media

There are various kinds of movies for various kinds of tastes. Mainly, I like to watch musical, fantastic, adventure movies.
This fragment is from Step Up 2. The movie talks about the life style in the streets, streets dancers. And Andie’s mom died a time ago and she lives with her mother’s best friend who promised her mom to look after Andie. She is aware of Andie’s street dancing and is very worried about her, and wants to send her to Texas for her safety. Losing in bet, she accepts studying in The MSA, knowing it Tuck gets her out the crew. Meeting with Chase everything changes, they start their own crew, work hard and win the final battle versus “The 410” crew (street dancers) and get their respect back.
This movie is very interesting for me. When I watched this film I wanted to be able to dance alike. Who knows, maybe one day I also can dance like they do, maybe even better.:)
In the movie they start The MSA crew, set a goal and accomplish it .I would also like to achieve to my aim after my efforts. This film influences my LIMBIC, REPTILIAN, NEORCORTEX brains.
Dancing relates to reptilian and music to limbic.But dancing is based on music,plus if we consider that as the result of our emotions,affected by music we start to dance, so somehow we can equalize them in this context.
The movie makes me think, because in the movie they take risk and accomplish to their goal. And there is a saying that “If you don’t risk, so means you risk even more!”, which makes me think. The second think that makes me think in the movie is this sentence “It's not what you've got, It's what you make with what you've got”, which I think is the highlighted part of the movie.

My Media Inventory

1.I like reading books very much. Mainly I read fantastic stories,dramas,novels and so on. Recently, I read a book of Huseyn Javid, famous Azerbaijani writer.The Drama called “Devil” is about the war, peoples’ troubles and tragedies during war.

"The Deep End of the Ocean” novel by Jacquelyn Mitchard. This is very touching story.




2.I like reading newspaper because I get information about the events happening in the world and our country. But I don’t like reading magazines about show business. Because, they are mostly about the personal life of peoples, which I think is very annoying. Mostly, I read magazines about education, sport and etc. Plus, I like the magazine called “Bravo” very much, because I find photos and wallpapers of my favorite singers and music bands.

3. I love to listen music very much. This love has created a deeper interest in me to music,and I have learnt playing in the piano in the music school.I listen to music while doing sport, some clean up, playing games, briefly music is with me wherever I am. I download songs to my computer, and listen to them with my headphones on. I like Rock Music very much. My favorite and irreplaceable band is Linkin Park. I enjoy listening to their songs. Also like Miley Cyrus who is pretty talented and has good songs. I also would like to mention our “Mugam” which is well-known all over the world. So I like listening to this beautiful type of music, as well, mostly performed by our famous singers : Alim Gasimov, Arif Babayev, and so on.

4.I like to watch TV very much in my free time. I watch news, movies, cartoons, music clips and entertaining programs. My favourite channels are all Azerbaijani channels,Nickelodeon,Mtv,Discovery, CNN, National geographic, Animal Planet, Euronews ,turkish channels and etc. I like to watch football very much.On Mtv channel and other music channels I listen my favourite musics and watch music videos.On Nickelodeon channel I like to watch cartoons- for example Spongebob, El Tigre, Wayside, Danny Phantom, The adventure Jimmy Neutron. Other cartoons I watch are Sailor Moon,Bugs Bunny,Duffy Duck,Slyvestor,Taz, Mickey mouse and so on.My favourite movies are “Kung-Fu Panda”, “The Deep of the Ocean”, “Harry Potter”, “The GamePlan”, “The night at the Museum”, “Blood Diamond”,”Shrek”, “The Simpsons”, “Drake and Josh” “Unfabulous” ,“Garfield”, “Hum Tum” and so on.










5.I don’t play videogames, I play computergames. My favourite computergames are Luxor Amun Rising, GTA, Need for Speed and etc.



















6. I use computer as every modern day people do. I cannot imagine my life without computer, because I spend most part of my day with computer. Mainly I enter to internet, listen to music, play games, and so on.








7.I am regular internet user. I enter internet and I download songs, watch clips, read different informations, and do my researches. I download pictures to my computer and then draw this pictures in my copy-book, I am regular member of some forums. I have many friends in these forums.

Huseyn Javid

Huseyn Javid (Azeri: Hüseyn Cavid)was a prominent Azerbaijani poet and playwright of the early 20th century. He was one of the founders of progressive romanticism movement in the contemporary Azerbaijani literature.

Huseyn  Javid was born in 1880 to a family of a theologian in Nakhchivan. After completing his elementary education at a religious school in 1898, Javid pursued his mid-school education in the Maktab-i Tarbiya of Mashadi Taghi Sidgi. In 1899–1903, Huseyn Javid studied in the Talibiyya Madrasah in Tabriz. After obtaining a degree in literature at the Istanbul University in 1909, Javid worked as a teacher in Nakhchivan, Ganja and Tiflis, and starting from 1915 in Baku.
Huseynn Javid's first book of lyrical poems titled "Kechmish gunlar" ("The Past Days") was published in 1913. However Javid was known more as a playwright. His philosophical and epic tragedies and family dramas introduce a new line of development in Azerbaijani literature. In his literary tragedy "Sheikh Sanan" (1914), Huseyn Javid philosophized about the idea of a universal religion to lift inter-religious barrier between humans. His most famous creation, "Iblis" ("Devil") published in 1918, exposed all oppressive forces as the supporters of "humans are wolves to each other" philosophy and "the 20th century cultural savages", and summarized them in the character of Devil. In his works, Javid criticized any form of colonialism and oppression.
During the 1920s and 1930s, Huseyn Javid authored a number of historical epics, such as Peyghambar ("The Prophet") in 1922, Topal Teymur in 1925, Sayavush in 1933 and Khayyam in 1935.

1.Dilara is my name which means pretty. I am from Azerbaijan the country of fires. I live in Baku the city of winds and the capital of my country. To be from Azerbaijan means to love poetry, to love music, to love nature and so on. Therefore, I like to study literature and music in the high school.I sang in the music school chorus and play piano. At the school to study literature and read works of Azerbaijani classics.But I also like to study mathematics and learn English.I like drawing pictures and making nice things with my hands.
I have dreams and wishes like everybody.I sometimes dream to travel allaround the world and see many countries.Therefore,I would like to be an international journalist and make reportages about peoples in the world,their culrtures,traditions,lives,cuisine and problems.I like to observe nature and people, so it will be an interesting job for me.
I want to tell you about my personality.But it is hard to talk about myself,because I can be different in different places and times.For example, when I am in new place with people I do not know, I can be shy and quite.But when I am with my friends at school or at home I am outgoing and like to be a leader.I like to work with my friends on interesting projects and make something nice and difficult.


2.Media plays important role in my life.I get a lot of information about the world and learn new things about my people,community and different cultures and traditions.Media is very powerful in our lives, because it forms our world.I like surfing in the internet.I read a lot of news and information on the internet.But I also like reading books.Now I read a book of Husain Javid famous Azerbaijani writer.Drama named "Devil" and it is about the war,peoples troubles and tragedies during wars. It is a very touching story.
I watch TV one or two hours everyday. I watch movies,cartoons,music clips and entertaining programs.Recently,I watch Kung-Fu Panda cartoon movie.It was very funny and I laughed a lot.I do not play videogames but play computer games, for example Luxor Amun Rising.


3.I'm concerned about cleaning of my city and traffic jams on the roads.I believe that we need to educate citizens of my community that they keep our city clean,protect nature and be careful on the roads when they drive and follow traffic rules.They should beleive that it is important for their health and welfare.They should learn about the role of community service for that. Everybody should contribute to the community for free if they live in it.


4.I think that DOTCOM program will creat for me a lot of opportunities for getting new acquaintances,having information about other countries and learning teh ways of using opportunities of Information Technology for learning about the world and telling the world about my country.I will be an ambassador of my county and share my country's culture and traditions with my new friends from ohter countries.I will contribute with my interesting ideas,skills and experience for goals of this program.I hope that it will be interesting for other peoples to learn about my country and works with me in this project.

My family consists of five people.My father,mother,two brothers and me.My father Zakir Valiyev is an engineer,mother Elmira Valiyeva is an economist,my eldest brother Kamil Valiyev is a lawyer,my other brother Ali Valiyev is an agriculturist and me Dilara.I'm student.I study in the 9th class.
